You can't begin to do research until you understand the assignment.
If you don't understand or have questions about your assignment, always ask your professor for help before starting your research. Your professor is the person who created the assignment, so only they can explain exactly what they want you to accomplish with it.
Once you understand the assignment, you are ready to start the research process.
